Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya, situated in the eastern chunk of India. Situated in the domain of the seven sister states, Shillong is approximately a hundred kilometers away from Guwahati, nestled at an altitude of 4,908 feet. The capital of Shillong enjoys a subtropical highland climate, with cool summers with bouts of rains and cool winters. It served as the capital of the undisputed Assam and presently serves as the capital of Meghalaya after the split.
Shillong, owing to its green rolling pastures and verdant valleys, posed a stark resemblance to Scotland. Hence, the British named it "The Scotland of the East". The region is inhabited by the Khasi tribes, who live in quaint slanted roof settlements that are colorfully hued and teamed with large spacious windows. The society of Shillong follows a matrilineal social construct, where the children take up the mother’s surname. They do not practice the tradition of dowry acceptance either.

Shillong Peak, at 1965 meters, is the highest point in Shillong. You cannot miss the Butterfly Museum that houses some of the rarest butterflies and the 5,200 feet high golf course dotted by rhododendron blooms.
